Church of Kaianus Complete

ID: 112

Building type: church

Context:

funerary; church; village

Inscriptions:

146

Description:

The building comprises two churches – the lower one, termed "funerary" in reports, with six inscriptions, and the upper one: a one-aisled basilical structure with a rectangular presbyterium housing six inscriptions. The church apparently belonged to a monastic complex. The church underwent a restoration in the sixth century – the mosaic pavement was relaid. Newer studies of ceramics point to the abandonment of the Church of Kaianus at the end of the first half of the seventh century [*reference]. Plan ("the upper mosaic floor") after M. Piccirillo, E. Alliata (eds.), Mount Nebo. New Archaeological Excavations 1967–1997 (Jerusalem : Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, 1998), p. 357.
