Description:
The fortress was erected on the footprint of an earlier monastic establishment. The chapel has been subject to multiple maintenance campaigns and retains mosaic ornamentation with geometric patterns and animal imagery, notably eagles and fish. Traces of iconoclastic defacement indicate that these decorations predate the eighth century. Plan based on: Piccirillo and Qudah 2003, p. 315, fig. 17.
