Description
In the complex of chambers adjacent to the church in the monastery, in the central one there is a relatively well-preserved mosaic pavement depicting a checkerboard grid with crosses. Near the threshold of the door communicating with the church there is a two-line inscription in Syrian-Palestinian. There is a cross in the end of the second line. The whole inscription is framed by tabula ansata. The inscription is at the fringe of the mosaic that was decorated with geometrical ornaments and once depicted humans and animals, but they seem to be deliberately destroyed in the second stage of the monastery’s history (after 723AD). (according to al-Hasan). Text: 1. O Lord ask (grant) mercy to the priest QYA (QYAN? – noted by al-Hasan, however, it is uncertain whether it was correctly deciphered.) 2. the son of HSBWBW that has consecrated(?) the chamber(?)
