date: 5th-6th c. description: Greek dedicatory inscription in the upper margin of the right-most panel in the band 6 of the nave mosaic. Text is only partially preserved and has seven lines. The much destroyed panel once depicted the binding of Isaac. The characters are 5.5 cm high on average. ed. IIP sepp0023 Μ[νησθ]ῶσιν εἰς ἀ[γα]θὸν κα[ὶ εἰς εὐλ]ογία- ν Ἀ[ννι]ανὸς κὲ Π[9 char.] ἀδελ- φοί καὶ [16 char.] [Ϲ]ωζό- με[νος] [15 char.] [πρωτ]εύον- τος [καὶ] [7 char.] μετὰ [τῶν τέκ]νων. Ἐ- πο[ίησαν τὴν τάβλαν ταύτην] Εὐλογί- α αὐτοῖς [...] 'Be remembered for good and for blessing the brothers A[nni]anos? and P[...and...] and [... and S]ozome[nos and ...(son) of...] the principalis (?) [and...with his children (?)]. They made [this panel]. A blessing upon them.' commentary: Line 4-5: the letters EYONTO can be the genetive of a present participle ending - εύω. An expression indicating a position or an office is expected in this place. Possibilities are numerous but a form deriving from verb πρωτεύω, which generally means "to be the first" is most likely to be found in this context. Since the second half of the fourth century, the principales or primates, with respective terms in Greek, were responsible for the city's administration.
