Description
date: 100 CE to 499 CE according to IIP Firi0001 description: Bilingual Greek-Aramaic funerary inscription on a lintel. Limestone lintel separated into two parts by triglyphs. There is a rosette on the right side, and the bilingual inscription in separate registers on the left side. Lintel is 55x99 cm The text is in two tabalae anastae, each is 20 cm wide and ca.15 cm high. The Hebrew letters (two lines) in the upper tabula are 2.5-8 cm high. The Greek letter (three lines) in the lower tabula are 3-4 cm high. ed. CIIP V 6113 יוסף בר עזי μνήμη [Ιώ]σηπ- ος Αζεου '(Aramaic) Yosef son of ‘Uzi (Greek) Tomb. Iosepus (son) of Azeus.' commentary: The inscription is stored in Hecht Museum in Haifa. It has never been properly published before the edition published in the most recent volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae (CIIP V 6113). The given name of Joseph in Greek is in the nominative. It should be rather expressed in the genitive as most likely connected to the preceding word that determine the aim of dedication.
