Ten Commandments
date: late Byzantine/early Arab period = 500-800 CE (?) description: White marble plate, with badly preserved 20 lines of Hebrew letters in the archaic style, characteristic for the Samaritans. There are ca. 11-15 incised letters in each line. A horizontal line runs below line 2, separating the two upper lines from the rest of the text. Dimensions: 62 cm high, 56 cm wide and 6 cm thick. Thou shalt not bear (false witness) against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not desire (thy neighbor’s wife). And thou shalt set up(?) these stones(?) which I command you today on Mt. Gerizim. Let the Lord arise.' commentary: Y. Kaplan, who was the first editor, claimed that he acquired this item in 1943 from an Arab residing in the village. The text is badly preserved, and its central part is almost entirely obliterated. The first two lines contain the opening invocation which are a common version of the blessing introducing the reading in the Torah. Beyer, however, translated this part as dedication to Qorah. The rest lines contain parts of the Samaritan version of the Ten Commandments. Perhaps, the last part of the text preserved the beginning of yet another biblical verse.
