date: 600 – 650 CE description: Inscription with blessing upon Is(t)rael in Greek. Mosaic inscription in an octagonal frame (44x60 cm) located in central nave. Text and guilloche were formed in polychrome (grey and orange) tesserae against white background. Letters are 5-7.5 cm high. ed. IIP tqas0002 εὐλογία καὶ {ἠ}ρήνη τῷ Ἰσ{τ}ρα[ὴ]λ κ(αὶ) τῷ τ- όπ{ου} Ἀμήν. 'Blessing and peace upon Istrael and this place. Amen.' ed. CIIP III 2167 εὐλογία καὶ ἠρήνη τῷ Ἰστρα[ὲ]λ κ(αὶ) τῷ τ- όπου. Ἀμήν. 'Blessing and peace on Israel and this place. Amen.' commentary: The spelling of Israel with tau is attested elsewhere, for instance in the phrase ἰρήνη τῷ Ἰστραὴλ in a gravestone from Jaffa (CIIP III 2231). Commentary

The spelling of Israel with tau is attested elsewhere, for instance in the phrase ἰρήνη τῷ Ἰστραὴλ in a gravestone from Jaffa (CIIP III 2231). The ἠρήνη for εἰρήνη and τῷ τόπου for τῷ τόπῳ are examples of orthographic interchanges in late antique Greek.
