Description

date: 716/717 CE (the year 1028 of the Seleucid era). description: On a slab reused in a modern (or medieval?) house. There is no mention of decorations or special carvings. Dimensions of the block: H. 43 cm; W. 49 cm. Letter height 3–7 cm. ed. Jarry 1967, 146, no. 11. Cf. TIB 15, p. 1360. ܐܬܒܢܐ ܒܝܬܐ ܗ[ܢܐ] ܒܫܢܬ ܐܠܦ .4 ܬܡܢܝܐܬܐ ܘܥܣܪܝܢ ‘Cette maison a été construite en l’an 1028 (= 716/717 de notre ère).’ (tr. J. Jarry) ‘This house was built in the year 1028 (= 716/717 CE).’ commentary: Jarry notes that the spelling ܬܡܢܝܐܬܐ is problematic. The literary sources suggest that in the sixth century the village was certainly occupied by devout non-Chalcedonians (see our description of the site and TIB 15, p. 1360). The find of a single inscription from the private context gives, however, little basis for reliable conclusions on the correlation between the creed and the choice of the language of commemoration. Perhaps, more finds would illuminate the issue.

Commentary

Jarry notes that the spelling ܬܡܢܝܐܬܐ is problematic.
