Description
The most prominent remains at En Gadi belong to the Byzantine era, notably a synagogue whose floors display elaborate mosaic decoration; this building is both the best preserved and the most thoroughly studied monument at the site. En Gadi itself occupies an oasis in the Judean Desert along the western margin of the Dead Sea. Literary attestations are concentrated in the Second Temple and Roman–Byzantine periods. Josephus (War 3.55) notes the city as the seat of the toparchies of Judea. Further reading: CIIP IV, 3853–3855.
