Description

Known today as Khirbet el-Ma'in, the ancient settlement of Ma’on lies roughly 20 km southwest of Gaza. From the fourth century CE onward it functioned as the administrative hub of the Saltus Constantiniaces, and it hosted a garrison composed of Illyrian cavalry. The site’s most notable architectural remain is its synagogue, brought to light in the 1950s by an archaeological team under the direction of S. Levy.
