Description
The study of inscriptions from Tur ʿAbdīn began in the early twentieth century with the work of H. Pognon and was expanded by J. Jarry in 1972; the most recent editions of material from the area were prepared by A. Palmer. Geographically, Tur ʿAbdīn lies in southeastern Turkey, adjoining the Syrian frontier. The region includes roughly eighty villages and close to seventy monasteries, the latter affiliated primarily with the Syriac Orthodox Church.
