Description
Ashdod, identified with ancient Azotus, belonged to the Philistine Pentapolis and is mentioned in the Old Testament. The site lies approximately 5 km inland from the Mediterranean coast. Its archaeological zone is extensive, extending about 2 km on a north–south axis and roughly 1.5 km east–west, and it preserves remains from several periods of occupation. The southern part is occupied by an Iron Age tell; immediately north of this mound are buildings from the Roman–Byzantine period; and the northern sector contains a fortress dating to the Early Islamic era.
