Description:
The synagogue’s precise site and overall architectural scheme have not been conclusively established. A substantial body of inscriptions is associated with it: one in Latin; twenty-four in Greek, most of them funerary; and sixteen in Arabic—two milestones from the early eighth century and fourteen funerary inscriptions dating to the eighth–ninth centuries. Architectural fragments attributed to the building consist primarily of columns with notable capitals and lintels bearing reliefs of menorahs, rosettes, and wreaths. On the strength of this assemblage, scholars have proposed that, within the town, the synagogue surpassed the church in size.
