Bazaar Complete

ID: 219

Building type: unknown

Context:

urban

Inscriptions:

338 , 339

Description:

E. Littmann, judging from the plan, equated the structure with a Greek stoa, whereas H. Butler identified it as a bazaar. Architecturally, an elongated, two-tier colonnade of rectangular monolithic piers traced a continuous rectangular circuit that, before the main block, enclosed a broad open court. The building, now in ruin, appears to have had a single entrance, probably located near the eastern extremity of the colonnade. On the second storey, the first two panels of the parapet carried Syriac inscriptions. Image source: PAES II B 4, III 184. Further references: PAES II B 4, 176; AAES IV, 14, 15.
