Description
Situated in Gabal Barisa roughly 4.5 km north of Sarmada, Bābisqā preserves remains of both sacred and secular architecture. The published plan records, among other features, two churches, public baths, and a stoa. The settlement also contained numerous bazaars, the archaeological traces of which are particularly well preserved. Epigraphic testimony identifies Bābisqā as among the earliest towns in the area. One temple is dated to the first half of the second century CE. Inscriptions from the fourth century attest to considerable building activity; in the fifth century they record the erection of churches, and texts of the sixth century mention the establishment of shops.
