Description
date: the 6 or the early 7 c. CE description: The inscription found in the southern part of the industrial zone in Shelomi. Text in a rectangular frame (ca. 2 m long). Mosaic floor is arranged in a white scale-pattern with red and yellow tesserae. Source of image: Tahan, Syon 2010: 163, fig. 3 Text (CIIP V 6003): [-- ἡ ψήφ]οσις | [-- ἐ]πὶ τοῦ εὐλ(αβεστάτου) | [--] Μαρουθᾶ | [-- ὑπὲρ] σοτη| [ρίας --]ΤΟ μη(νὶ) | [-- ἔτους ..]+, ἰ(νιδικτιῶνος) α’ '… the making of the mosaic … under the most pious … Maruthas … for the salvation of … in the month …, year …, indiction one.' (CIIP V 6003) Text (Tahan, Syon 2010: 163): [(cross) ἐτελιώθη ἡ ψή]φοσις | [τοῦ ἁγίου τόπου ἐ]πὶ τοῦ εὐλ(αβεστάτου) | [καὶ θεοφιλ(εστάτου) Μαρουθα | [πρεσβ(υτέρου) ὑπὲρ] σοτη| [ρίας αὐτοῦ ἐγέν]ετο μηνὶ | [-- ἔτους γχ]ϙ’ ἰ(νδικτιῶνος) α’ 'Τhe mosaic of the holy place was completed in the time of the most pious and God beloved Maroutha the priest, for his salvation; made in the month of [---], year [6]9[3], indiction 1.' (by Tahan, Syon 2010: 163) commentary: For the Semitic name Maruthas, see. CIIP II 1141. The restoration of the date is suggested by the indiction and the remains of the Tyrian year most likely used in the inscription. Neither [χ]ϙ’ (690=564/5 AD) nor [ψ]ϙ’ (790=664/5 AD) coincide with a first year of indiction. The mixed order of the numerals was suggested. Therefore the reconstruction 693 (1 September 567-30 August 568 AD) was chosen by the first editors simply because it is statistically more probable. CIIP V 6003 Tahan, H. & Syon, D. 2010. Commentary
For the Semitic name Maruthas, see.
