Description

date: 5th-6th century CE description: Partially preserved three lines inscription in JPA square script on a marble column. ed. CIIP III 2288 ]ד[כירין ל]טב […] [ בר חנ] […] בר[ יעק]ב[…][ [d]kyryn l[ṭb] […] br ḥn […][br] yʿq[b] […] 'Remembered for good be ... son of Ḥn... (son of?) Yaakov(?) ...' commentary: This inscription is very fragmentary but it resembles other dedicatory inscriptions from the Late Roman synagogues. The formula dkyryn lṭb (“remembered for good”) appears in many JPA dedicatory inscriptions. Moreover its plural form indicates there were more than one benefactor. The earlier publishers offered the alternative names Ḥnn and Ḥnnyh, but both seem doubtful. Fischer, Taxel, Amit, BASOR 350, 2008: 8-9 CIIP III 2288

Commentary

This inscription is very fragmentary but it resembles other dedicatory inscriptions from the Late Roman synagogues. The formula dkyryn lṭb (“remembered for good”) appears in many JPA dedicatory inscriptions. Moreover its plural form indicates there were more than one benefactor. The earlier publishers offered the alternative names Ḥnn and Ḥnnyh, but both seem doubtful.
