Description
date: 400 – 650 CE description: The funerary inscription on the rectangular front panel of the sarcophagus lid. On one triangular end of the lid is a decoration of a rosette of four leaves enclosed in a circle; on the other end, the same decoration appears above a so-called "tree of life." Dimensions: 35 x 139 x 55 cm. Letters are 5-8 cm high. ed. IIP einn0003 שמעון בר אבון בר שנין כו šmʿwn br ʾbwn br šnyn kw 'Shimon, son of Abun. Twenty-six years old.' commentary: This Shimon seems to be the son of Abun who was commemorated in the Aramaic dedicatory inscription found in the synagogue in En Nashot. The numerical value of the last two letters sums up to 26, which seems to be the age of the deceased. The function of the second (br) is not clear.
