Description
date: 500-600 CE description: Greek inscription naming artisans on the mosaic floor in the room next to the entrance to the main hall (Room 7). Five lines of Greek text within a circle decorated with geometrical design. Blue letters on white background. The line 5 is smaller and squeezed into the narrow space between horizontal layout line and the perimeter. ed. CIIP V 7590 χιροθε- ία Μαρια- νοῦ καὶ το(ῦ) υἱοῦ αὐτο- ῦ Ἀνίνα 'Handiwork of Marianus and his son Aninas' commentary: Interestingly, both artisans who made here were also mentioned in the mosaic inscription in the synagogue at Beth Alfa (CIIP V 7563). Since that pavement was laid in 518-527 CE, this one should be made more or less at the same time. Aninas seems to be a Greek form of the Hebrew name Ḥanina. Among the orthographic phenomena there is the haplography of το(ῦ) υἱοῦ in line 3-4, rather than a less likely explanation that ἱοῦ was intended instead of υἱοῦ. The similar process, however, is visible in the line 1: χιροθεία for χειροθεία. Commentary
Interestingly, both artisans who made here were also mentioned in the mosaic inscription in the synagogue at Beth Alfa (CIIP V 7563).
