date: 5th-6th c. CE description: Stone building block inscribed with four lines of Samaritan script. Probably the mezuzah's text flanked by two palm leaf branches. Dimensions: 67x155x31 cm. ed. CIIP IV 3080 יהוה גיבור במלחמה יהוה שמו יהוה נחיתו בא ברוך יהוה אין כאל ישרון yhwh gybwr bmlḥmh yhwh | šmw yhwh nḥytw | bʾ brwk yhwh | ʾyn kʾl yšrwn 'YHWH is a hero in war, YHWH is his name, YHWH his guide, come in, thou blessed of YHWH, there is none like unto the God of Jeshurun.' commentary: Line 1 quotes Exodus 15: 3, which has “man” (ʾyš) instead of “hero”, which is to be compared with Psalms 24: 8. Line 3 gives a quotation from Genesis 24:31 that is the Laban’s blessing of Abraham. Line 4 quotes Deuteronomy 33: 26. All these verses are known from Samaritan mezzuzot, except for the quotation from Genesis (Laban’s blessing) which is a specific blessing welcoming a visitor. The last sentence (Deut 33: 26) was suspected to be written here against the trinity faith of the Byzantine authorities. It might have been historically connected with the rebellion of Baba Rabba, the Samaritan leader, in the second half of the 4 c. Nevertheless, the inscription is formulaic and there is no evident clue of any ethno-religious intents beside the script itself. CIIP IV 3080
