Description

A ruined village called Ǧneyd, aslo: Ǧened and ´Genêd, situated c.18 km to the south-east of as-Safīra (not mentioned in TIB 15). Our map gives an approximate location. The location was briefly mentioned by Alois Musil in 1928, among other villages and hamlets near as-Safīra. Later, the epigraphical evidence from was discussed by René and Paul Mouterde. The contents of the Greek and Syriac inscriptions suggest the presence of a church. Little is known of other buildings. This was reportedly a monastic site. Literature: Musil, A., Palmyrena: A Topographical Itinerary (New York: The American Geographical Society, 1928), p. 198. 2: Chalcidique et Antiochène: nos 257-698 (Paris: P. Geuthner, 1939), no. 279.
