Description
The ancient toponym of the site remains unidentified. It occupies a high tableland where material evidence attests to habitation across the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. Archaeological investigations revealed a synagogue articulated in three principal construction phases; the earliest belongs to the initial centuries of the Common Era. In later strata, the most recent architectural remains consist of domestic structures dating to the Umayyad, Abbasid, and Mamluk periods. The modern Arab village was established by immigrants from Egypt, a circumstance that accounts for its present name. Further reading: Milson, D.W. 2007.
