Description
Šayḫ Sulaymān lies on the southern flanks of Djebel Simān. The ancient settlement is now deserted, and thick vegetation blankets the remains. A conspicuous tower set on a hill, rising above the tree canopy, renders the site readily identifiable. In the outlying quarters, where the plant cover is sparser than in the core area, architectural remnants are visible. The domestic buildings there followed the region’s restrained architectural idiom, typically arranged around ample courtyards. The town also possessed at least three basilical churches: the principal and largest stood in the central district, while two others were located to the south. Further reading: PAES II B, 333-337.
