date: 5-6 c. CE description: Aramaic mosaic inscriptions of Daniel and Shmuʾel in square Jewish script, located in the southern panel in the nave of the main hall (D). This part of mosaic consists of two parts. The first one, a label, in two lines, is placed above and to the right of the Daniel’s head (defaced) and his praying arms. The second part, a dedication, in two lines, is placed below the Daniel’s arm. The figure of Daniel and lions, mostly defaced. Source of image: CIIP IV fig 2733.1 and CIIP IV fig 2733.2 ed. CIIP IV 2733: label (above Daniel’s arm): דניא[ל] | שלום dnyʾ[l] | šlwm dedication (below Daniel’s arm): דכיר לט[ב] | שמואל dkyr lṭ[b] | šmwʾl 'Daniel, peace. May Shmuʾel be remembered for the good.' commentary: The mosaic was damaged by iconoclasts who ruined the images of Daniel and the lions but left the inscriptions almost intact.
