date: 5-6 c. CE description: Aramaic dedication to the synagogue. Three lines of square Jewish script situated on the mosaic floor in the southern panel in the nave of the main hall (G). CIIP IV 2736 [--]vדכיר לטב מרו בר כריס[-- ו-- ברה] חולקהון בה[דן אתרה קדישה, אמן] dkyr lṭb mrw[--] br krys[-- w-- brh] ḥwlqhwn bh[dn ʾtrh qdyšh ʾmn] 'Remembered for the good be mrw… the son of Krys… and … his son(?). Their share is in this holy place, Amen.' commentary: (CIIP IV 2736): The identical mrw- at the beginning of a personal name in this inscription and no. 2735 may indicate the same title, mrwt, if not the same person in each text. The father’s name could be Krispus from Latin Crispus or similar name. Rabbi Krospai/Krispao is mentioned several times in the Jerusalem Talmud though. A Jew named Κρίσπος is known in the synagogue inscription in Tiberias (Roth-Gerson, Greek inscriptions, no. 15). A Jewish name beginning Chris- is not likely. The fragmentary condition of the inscription makes it impossible to identify what the donors actually gave. As it is similar to CIIP IV 2735 the donors here may also have been involved in repairs.
