Description

date: 400-700 CE description: Greek mosaic inscription in the main hall, decorated with geometrical design. ed. CIIP V 7597 … [--] ΥΤΩΝΙΟΝΕΟΟΝ '???' commentary: There was at least one line of text above the preserved line. The preliminary interpretation suggested the reading TOUTON NEWN meaning “This is the temple”. However, the legible letters appear not to be so. The meaning of the inscription is obscure. This reading is probably wrong, and the inscription reads [ὑπὲρ σωτηρίας ... καὶ τῶν α]ὐτῶν γονέων – "[As a vow on behalf of ... and of] their parents". The phrase is attested, for example, in Rihāb near Bostra in the province of Arabia (SEG 30 1715) in 534 CE. [P.N.] CIIP V 7597 https://library.brown.edu/iip/viewinscr/bshe0155/

Commentary

There was at least one line of text above the preserved line. [P.N.]
