Description

date: 6th -8th century CE description: Syriac inscription on a piece of a limestone excavated in the chapel (Raum 601) but it was found in a secondary context. The two lines at the top are written somewhat larger than the four lines that follow. However, as can be easily recognized, they come from the same hand and thus prove to belong together. The inscription is broken and missing some part of text to the right (the beginnings of each line). As the content of the text suggests, the lines must originally have been at least twice, if not three times as long. Dimensions: ca. 21x11x29 cm. ed. Maiberger 1983: 163-166 ܬ ܩ/ܣ ܝ ܡ ܘ ܗ ܒ ܕܠܟ ܐܙܡܪ ܘܛܐ (ܚ/ܣ/ܩ/ܫ)ܡܥܘ ܐܕܚܐ ܗܘܝܬ ܚܘܒ ܐܘܕܘ ܥܕܪܟ ܟܬ t q/s y m w h b dlk ʾzmr wtʾ (ḥ/s/q/š)mʿw ʾdḥʾ hwyt ḥwb ʾwdw ʿdrk kt "lege/setze/bestimme/halte/nimm an/erreicht/bestätige/bekräftige/erhebe/errichte/versprich! damit ich dir (Psalmen) singe hört! „(wenn immer) ich zurückweisen sollte”/ „ich hätte zurückweisen sollen“/„daß ich zurückwies”/ „ich pflegte zurückzuweisen“/ „ich wollte zurückweisen“/ „ich würde zurückweisen“ hilflos/Schild/Sünden/Liebe “damit ich dir singe” / “ich will singen” ???" commentary: Whatever the exact content of these lines may have been, it is clear that we are dealing with a psalm-like prayer of supplication and praise. This identification is also supported by the location of the inscription, namely the chapel, as the most suitable place to write a prayer on the wall. Commentary

Whatever the exact content of these lines may have been, it is clear that we are dealing with a psalm-like prayer of supplication and praise. This identification is also supported by the location of the inscription, namely the chapel, as the most suitable place to write a prayer on the wall.
