Commentary

According to Maiberger, the person mentioned by this inscription is probably the same one who was mentioned in line 7 of the stone inscription 1 from the same monastery, as yʿqwb m[ʾr]ī “My lord Jacob”. Hence, we may identify him with the abbot of the monastery at Tel Masos. The deprecatory epithet ḥṭy “sinner” is frequently encountered in Syriac inscriptions and the colophons of the manuscripts. For instance, ʾwsbwn ḥṭyʾ “Eusebon, the sinner” in the inscription from the North church at Deir Sim’an. This derogatory description was adopted in the humble awareness of inadequacy and in the hope of the reader's prayer.
