Description
date: 5th c. (415 AD?) description: Aramaic inscription on mosaic pavement in the north-western most room of the church complex, found together with a Greek inscription in the same room, the latter dated to 415 AD. The mosaic panel is framed by red tesserae. The central motif is the circle with a Greek cross. Syriac script appears (1) within the circle, between the arms of the circle as well as outside: (2) immediately outside the circle, opposite the first letters of group 1, (3) along the outer frame adjacent to group 2, (4) along the outer frame on the opposite side of the circle, (5) between group 4 and the circle, on the east. ܝܬܚܝܘܢ ܫܘܫܢ ܩܠܘܕܝ ܡܪ ܢܐܗܡ ܒܣܠܘ יתחיון שושן קלודיוס מר נאהמנו בסלו ytḥywn šwšn qlwdy mr nʾhmnw Bslw 'Let them live (or ‘be saved’) Susanna Claudia / Claudius (Lord?) Nehemiah' Boselos' (by Jacques 1987) 'Let them live: Shushan (Susanna), Claudi (Claudius), Mar-Nahemiu, Baselo.' (by CIIP V 6084) commentary: The inscription can be dated to ca. 415 CE as the other inscription in this room has this date. Thus it is probably the earliest Christian Palestinian Armaic mosaic inscription attested to date. The six letters of the phrase "Let them live/be saved" are written clockwise between the four quadrants created by the cross-bars within the circle. Outside of the circle, two names appear above and below this central motif. L. 4. Jacques, and consequently IIP editors omit translation of two first letters of this line (mr). It is included in the name of Mar-Nahemiu in CIIP V 6084 only. CIIP V 6084 Jacques A. 1987. A Palestinian-Syriac Inscription in the Mosaic Pavement at Evron. Commentary
The inscription can be dated to ca.
